Port Vale release star man for club transfer record to Grimsby Town

After being released by Port Vale, the 24-year-old made 71 appearances for the team over three seasons, spending the last campaign on loan at League Two champions Stockport County. Cass’s signing immediately relieved Crawley Town of the loss of right-sided defender Toby Mullarkey, who was let go for an undisclosed fee. Like Mullarkey, Cass is a right-sided defender who can play both center-back and right-back; most recently, he played both on the right of a back three and as a full-back in a four during his brief stint with Stockport last season.

According to David Artell, Town missed out on acquiring the former youth product of Newcastle United in January, but they now have him to make up for whatever versatility that Mullarkey’s departure may have taken away from the back line.

“I’m delighted we have been able to sign Lewis because I feel he will improve us in that area of the pitch,” stated the head coach of Grimsby. Lewis has always piqued our interest, and in January we made an attempt to sign him.

“After his stints with Port Vale and Stockport, we knew we were getting a good player with the right character and someone who also knows what’s required to win promotion out of this league.”
“I’m excited to work with him on a daily basis and support his growth as a player going forward.”

With the addition of Cass, Town has added to their upcoming new-look backline, which will include goalkeeper Jordan Wright and defenders Tyrell Warren, Cameron McJannet, and Matty Carson, all of whom arrived this summer.

The new defensive addition for the Mariners has been promoted numerous times in League Two, so he has experience getting out of the league and aims to contribute that knowledge to the team.

Cass added: “I’m buzzing to get it over the line. It’s been in the pipeline for a few weeks, so I’m glad to be here. The set-up is brilliant and I’m ready to go.” “I’ve been involved in a couple of promotions recently and we’ve got a good squad here and hopefully everyone can push each other. I’m naturally a full-back but I can also slot into a back three. I’m a fit lad who likes to get up and down and also defend one-on-one.”
