On a busy Friday, Torquay United made three fresh signing announcements prior to today’s important pre-season friendly against Plymouth Argyle.

The three new players are goalkeeper Matt Wonnacott, midfielder Omar Mussa, and attacking right back Finn Tonks, who is on loan from Bournemouth. Last week, the team added striker Cody Cooke from Bath City.

Last season, Tonks played for a spell at Truro City, where he initially became acquainted with Paul Wotton, the manager of the Gulls. He also became the first player on loan in a squad that currently has twenty players. At first, he signed a six-month contract.

After being given a trainee contract by previous Gulls manager Gary Johnson in 2022 but choosing to move to the north west, keeper Wonnacott left Wigan Athletic and returned to Torquay. Before leaving, Wonnacott was a standout goaltender for Chris Todd’s prosperous youth squad.

Last season, he was released by Wigan and went back “home” after spending some time on loan with Northwich Victoria, a team in the Northern League Premier Division. He will have to challenge James Hamon for Wotton’s starting custodian position.

After a season in the National League with Dagenham & Redbridge, exciting midfielder Mussa joins Torquay. In 2019, after starting his career in Belgium with KV Mechlen, Mussa joined Walsall. Before to Dagenham, he played for Weymouth and Dover Athletic. In 45 appearances, he scored five goals for Dagenham. Mussa is an international from Burundi as well.
