Portugal is out of the ongoing euros after 120 minutes of football loosing 4-5 on penalty shootouts to France.
Before the match took place at the Volksparkstadion in Hamburg, there were a lot of speculations on whether Portugal could get past France to get a possible sign off Euros trophy for Cristiano Ronaldo who has been their best player throughout the years.
Even though Ronaldo recorded zero goals in the tournament, his contributions and achievements for the Portugal national team is exceptional and is arguably the countries best player of all time.
Ronaldo is the all time top scorer in the UEFA European championship with 14 goals, he won the tournament in 2016 against France which is the only major tournament he’s won with the national team. There are still contemplations whether he can make it to the 2026 World Cup considering his age.
France on the other hand came to this game as favorites considering the quality of players they have including Mbappe who has been their main man. Even though France has not been on their best form in the tournament scoring just three goals and yet to score in open play.
However, they have been solid in defense conceding just one goal in the tournament which was a penalty awarded to Poland in the group stages.
After 90 minutes of football, the match ended without a goal. The match proceeded to extra time and extended to penalty shootouts, where finally the two teams were separated with France winning 4-5 on penalty shootouts.
Joao Felix who came on as a substitute for Raphael Leao was the only player among the ten penalty takers to miss. Theo Hernandez was the last man who converted nicely to see France to the semis where they will meet Spain on Tuesday.
