He’s scheduled to go back on the pitch.

Sam Tomkins, a former fullback for the New Zealand Warriors, has changed his mind about retiring and will play one more English Super League season with the Catalans Dragons in 2024.

After making the unexpected choice, he might play for the Dragons as early as the following weekend.

After being first tipped off by Jenna Brooks of Sky Sports, Tomkins has now responded to clarify that he will be returning to the park for the rest of 2024.

A few weeks ago, Steve asked, ‘What do you think the chances are that you’ll come back?’ And it’s gotten better over the last two weeks to the point where I signed a contract with Catalans till the end of the season,” Tomkins told the English newspaper.

“At the start of this week, we had a meeting and Steve said to the players ‘We have got a new player, Sam is going to be available to play’.”

Tomkins played an off-field role for the team this season. He retired in 2023 due to ongoing knee injuries that hindered his career.

Tomkins is a former English representative who has played 29 Test matches. Fans in Australia and New Zealand will know him best from his inconsistent two-year tenure with the New Zealand Warriors in 2014 and 2015.

Before retiring with Catalans in the south of France, he played another 103 games during the next four seasons of his career after playing 213 games with the Wigan Warriors in 2008 and again in 2016 and 2018.

The Dragons are in the running to play football in the championship game and are presently ranked fifth in the Super League standings. Tomkins’ comeback will provide the side with invaluable experience, but it’s unlikely that it will last until 2025.
