Man fighting for life after a catastrophic accident

The incident occurred on Yarm Road, between the Witham Avenue and Station Road crossroads.

A catastrophic car-flip crash in Eaglescliffe resulted in one person being transported to hospital.

In the early hours of Tuesday morning, police and paramedics were called to Yarm Road following a crash between the Witham Avenue and Station Road crossroads.

The incident is thought to have involved only one vehicle, a white Mercedes, with dramatic images from the aftermath showing the vehicle on its side, leaning against a damaged lamppost.

Police stopped the route for approximately 10 hours, with crash investigation work continuing until late Wednesday morning, while traffic were diverted around the area. The North East Ambulance Service (NEAS) has since confirmed that one individual was transported to James Cook University Hospital in Middlesbrough for further treatment.

The number of automobiles involved in the incident, as well as any potential injuries, have yet to be confirmed. However, Cleveland Fire Brigade, which dispatched two engines to the area, stated that it removed one individual from a vehicle before leaving them in the care of NEAS.

Images from the scene reveal the size of the emergency response, and NEAS stated that it had requested assistance from the Great North Air Ambulance Service. Evidence bags were discovered on the side of the street, beside automotive parts from the crumpled vehicle.

Teesside Live spoke with local residents who said they saw blue flashing lights in the early hours.

One dog walker who resided on a nearby street stated, “My wife said she saw all the flashing lights.” I believe it was around 1.30am. We can’t see anything from here; we only noticed the lamppost leaning over. “There were a lot of emergency services on the scene.”

The incident caused delayed traffic on adjoining Eaglescliffe streets as drivers attempted to navigate their way around the barrier. One pedestrian reported the scenario as “bumper to bumper” on Dunottar Avenue and Swinburne Road, a residential route utilised by motorists attempting to avoid the incident.

A representative for the fire service stated, “We were summoned to Yarm Road at 12:41 a.m. We dispatched two fire trucks: one from Thornaby and one from Yarm. The fire department extricated one casualty, leaving them in the care of the ambulance service. We received the halt message around 1:18 a.m. The firefighters made the scene safe.”

A NEAS spokesperson stated, “We were called to reports of a road traffic incident on Yarm Road in Eaglescliffe just after 12.30am this morning (3 March). We deployed a specialist paramedic, an ambulance crew, two Hazardous Area Response Team teams, and an officer, as well as requesting assistance from Great North Air Ambulance Service. “One patient was transported to James Cook Hospital for further treatment.”

Cleveland Police confirmed that Yarm Road, which was closed between Witham Avenue and Station Road in Eaglescliffe, has now reopened. We’d like to thank the motorists and people who were impacted by the closure for their cooperation and understanding while the collision investigation was underway.”
