Gillingham and Shaftesbury ask visitors to be aware of urgent road closures

Short-notice, emergency road closures in the area may impede travellers heading to the upcoming Gillingham and Shaftesbury Show.

Dorset Council has notified the show organisers that Melbury Abbas/Spread Eagle Hill (C13) will undergo essential repair work, and that area will be blocked 24 hours a day for the duration of the four days.

There will be a clearly marked diversion in place to reroute vehicles onto the A30.

The event will be held at the Turnpike Showground in Motcombe on August 28 and 29.

“We received notification of this work less than a week before our annual rural show,” stated Cat Harris, the festival’s organiser.

“I have received assurances from Dorset Council that there would be unambiguous signage to reroute traffic onto the A30 and maintain its seamless operation.

Although the timing is not ideal, we have no control over it. According to Dorset Council, the closure is necessary for critical road maintenance that cannot wait.

“There is a lot of traffic in the area due to the exhibitors and visitors to the trade fair. We would therefore like to urge all trade fair visitors to find out about these things before they arrive and perhaps plan more time for the journey to and from the exhibition grounds.”

Organised by the Gillingham & Shaftesbury Agricultural Society, this prestigious agricultural event celebrates its 30th anniversary at the Turnpike Showground in Motcombe and promises to be even more special this year.

Look forward to a wide range of breathtaking attractions – livestock parades, agricultural and landscape exhibitions, equestrian events, historic machines and cars, charming steam engines, live bands, a funfair and many other exciting attractions.

In addition to a range of rare and unusual sheep, cattle, pigs and goats, Joseph’s Amazing Camels will also be welcomed into the main arena this year.
