Two persons had to be removed from their vehicles after a violent collision between a car and a van on the A303 yesterday.

On August 15, at around 3.40pm, police, ambulance, and fire services from Yeovil, Ilminster, and Martock were dispatched to the A303 Seavington St Mary in response to what the police described as a’very serious accident’.

The A303 from Southfields roundabout to Hayes End roundabout was closed for roughly ten hours following the accident before reopening around 2 a.m. today morning (August 16), according to National Highways on Twitter.

According to the police, the incident involved a car and a van, and the route was likely to be closed for several hours. They urged people to avoid the area, which was causing traffic gridlock in Ilminster town centre and near Southfields.

Firefighters got many calls reporting a traffic incident on the A303 eastbound between Southfield and South Petherton.

A spokeswoman for Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue said: “Three fire engines from Ilminster, Yeovil, and Martock responded to the incident, along with an officer.”

“We used hydraulic gear and small tools to release 2 casualties and crew continue to work with Police and Ambulance on scene.”

Police are appealing for witnesses and anyone who has a dashcam and was in the area at the moment should notify the police department.
