Update 26 Daphne Lemke Ripon woman who died in 26-car crash

WAUPUN — A two-vehicle crash in the town of Waupun on Monday resulted in the death of a 75-year-old Ripon woman.

About 9:53 p.m. on April 8, a Fond du Lac County Sheriff’s Office sergeant arrived on the scene of the crash on State 26 near Cattaraugus Road and discovered the Ripon woman trapped under a car.

Soon after, a deputy showed up and assisted the sergeant in raising the front of the car and releasing the woman so that efforts to save her life could start.

The woman was flown in a Flight for Life helicopter to Froedtert Hospital in Milwaukee, where she passed away from her wounds.

Her name is Janice Handrich, according to an update from the sheriff’s office on April 9.

The preliminary investigation, as reported by the sheriff’s office, indicates that Handrich’s car was stopped in the southbound lane due to low gas, and she got out and was standing in front of it when it was hit by another southbound car. She was thrown onto the road shoulder by the force of the impact, whereupon she was struck by another vehicle and imprisoned beneath it.

The 73-year-old McFarland woman who was driving the second car was not hurt and was buckled up.

Reorganization of the Communications Center: Under the new arrangement, the Fond du Lac County Sheriff’s Office will be in charge of the countywide communications center.

For approximately two and a half hours, State 26 was closed between County Highway TC and U.S. 151 so that law enforcement could assess the situation. The Wisconsin State Patrol provided traffic control assistance on the scene.
