Ben Hughes, 38, was charged with the murder of Laura Robson, 37, after police received a report of a disturbance at a home.
Police have charged a man with the murder of a woman following reports of a disturbance at a residence in Gateshead.
Northumbria police identified the deceased woman as 37-year-old Laura Robson, and said her family was being assisted by highly trained personnel.
According to a spokeswoman, police got a report of a disturbance at an address in the Greenside neighbourhood about 10.20 p.m. Monday. The rescue services arrived and discovered Robson “with serious injuries consistent with being caused by an assault”. She was pronounced dead shortly afterwards.
Ben Hughes, 38, has been arrested and charged with murder. He is scheduled to appear at South Tyneside Magistrates Court in South Shields on Wednesday.
Detectives have advised the public not to speculate on the facts of the incident. Police believe the people involved knew each other.
The senior investigating officer on the case, DCI Rebecca Fenney of the force’s major investigation team, said: “I’d like to take this opportunity to reiterate that our sympathies are with Laura’s family and friends at this difficult time. We are continuing to support them in the aftermath of this awful tragedy and would appreciate it if they could be allowed time and solitude to understand what happened.
“A man has been charged with Laura’s murder and is scheduled to appear in court.” I would want to request that the public refrain from speculation, both online and in the community, and respect the existing judicial procedures.
“Anyone who has information regarding our investigation which could assist us should still get in touch.”
On Wednesday morning, a police cordon was set up around the residence, and flowers had been left at the spot.
