A pedestrian has died after being struck by a car in Gateshead, police have said. The 42-year-old man was hit by a black Volkswagen Golf on the A695 Ryton, between Woodside Lane and Stargate Lane.
Northumbria Police received a report of the collision just after 06:10 GMT on Wednesday. The driver of the car stayed at the scene to assist the police, they said.
The 42-year-old was pronounced dead shortly after emergency responders arrived.
The road was closed in both directions for approximately five hours.
Sgt Steve Chappell of Northumbria Police said: “This is a tragic event in which a man has regrettably died.
“Our thoughts are with his family and friends at this incredibly difficult time, and we will continue to support them in any way we can.”
Northumbria Police has asked witnesses to contact them if they saw the incident or have any relevant dashcam footage of either car or the pedestrian prior to the collision.
