Erik ten Hag reveals four-word message he told Man Utd stars moments after Tottenham loss

Erik ten Hag was defiant after the game, insisting he was not afraid of being sacked by Manchester United after their 3-0 loss to Tottenham – with the Dutchman also giving a rallying cry to his players

Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag has revealed he told his players “tomorrow is a new day” after their 3-0 thrashing at home to Tottenham on Sunday.

United suffered a nightmare evening as they were put to the sword by Spurs, who went in front after just three minutes through Brennan Johnson before Bruno Fernandes was given a controversial red card.

Dejan Kulusevski and Dominic Solanke added to the scoreline in the second half to heap pressure on the Dutchman and hand United their third defeat of the season.

It was the club’s second straight 3-0 home loss, after rivals Liverpool also brushed them aside in the last Premier League game at Old Trafford, with the Red Devils left 12th in the table after seven points from six games.

Ten Hag was defiant after the game, insisting he was not afraid of being sacked and believes the owners will give him time – with the Dutchman also giving a rallying cry to his dejected players.

The former Ajax boss said: “There is always a new day. I told the guys in the dressing room: ‘come on. Tomorrow, a new day. We will bounce back, I’m sure.'”

On his future, he added: “I am not thinking about this. We all made in the summer the decision to stay together, as an ownership, a leadership group.

“Also we made the decision from a clear review what we have to improve and how we want to construct a squad. But we knew it will take some time, how the window went, some players late in like [Manuel] Ugarte.

“We have to make some improvement in organisation, we still have some injuries, we need some time. We are all on one page or in one boat together, the ownership, the staff and the players as well. I don’t have that concern.”

United will have the chance to put this result right immediately as they prepare for a trip to FC Porto in the Europa League before travelling to Aston Villa – and ex-Red Devil Gary Neville believes the players should have a meeting without Erik ten Hag to dissect the manager of their defeat to Spurs.
