Brazil Confirms Dorival Junior As New Head Coach

The national men’s football team’s new coach, Dorival Junior, has been formally hired by the Football Confederation (CBF) of Brazil. The 61-year-old will succeed interim coach Fernando Diniz, who was fired by the CBF on Friday, after he recently made the decision to leave Sao Paulo.

“The men’s national team’s new coach is Dorival Junior. This Thursday at the CBF offices in Rio de Janeiro, a press conference will be held to present him, according to a statement released by the CBF.

Dorival takes over as coach of Brazil at a turbulent time that began with coach Tite’s firing following the team’s 2022 World Cup departure due to a penalty shootout loss to Croatia. After that, the team was briefly overseen by Under-20 coach Ramon Menezes until Diniz was appointed as an interim coach last year.

On Friday, Diniz’s term came to a sudden end when Ednaldo Rodrigues, the former head of the CBF who had been sacked in December by the Rio de Janeiro Court of Justice, was reinstated.

Born in Araraquara, São Paulo, Dorival was popularly known as Júnior during his playing career. In 1982, he made his senior team debut with Ferroviária, his hometown team. After a brief stay at Marília, which he also represented in the youth setup, he relocated to Guarani two years later.

Júnior started performing in the state of Santa Catarina in 1985, initially for Avaí and then Joinville. He returned to his home state of São José in 1988, but that same year he relocated to Coritiba.

Júnior joined Palmeiras in 1989 and stayed there until 1992. He was sold to Grêmio the following year, and in 1994 he became a member of Juventude.

After that, Júnior played for Araçatuba, Matonense, and Botafogo-SP before retiring from the latter.

In 1999, Júnior joined Matonense as Luiz Carlos Ferreira’s assistant right away after retiring. As Ferreirão’s constant assistant, he accompanied him to teams like Inter de Limeira, Atlético Sorocaba, Guarani, Paulista, and Santo André.

While serving as an assistant coach at Figueirense in April 2002, Júnior was appointed head coach of Ferroviária, his first club. That May, he departed to take a position as director of football at Figueirense once more.

Júnior succeeded Ferreira as head coach of Figueira in September 2003. On December 20, 2004, he was fired from the team after they had won the 2004 Campeonato Catarinense.

Júnior was hired head coach of Santos on December 5, 2009. With Robinho, Paulo Henrique Ganso, and Neymar as his main offensive players, he guided the team to the 2010 Campeonato Paulista and 2010 Copa do Brasil crowns including a historic 10–0 victory over Naviraiense in the latter competition. The team played ultra offensive football.

During a 4–2 home victory over Atlético Goianiense on September 15, 2010, Júnior and Neymar got into a fight. Neymar asked to take the spot kick after getting a penalty, but Júnior told him Marcel would take it instead. The coach and player continued to talk after Marcel’s score, and Neymar later in the game was not passing the ball to Marcel due to the incident that happened.

It was rumoured on September 21, 2010, that Júnior will punish Neymar for his lack of discipline by keeping him out of the forthcoming match against Corinthians. But a few hours later, he was fired.

On July 9, 2015, Júnior came back to Santos to take Marcelo Fernandes’ place. He led the team out of the relegation zone in his debut season, finishing seventh and qualifying for the 2015 Copa do Brasil finals.

In addition to winning the 2016 Campeonato Paulista, Júnior guided Peixe to the second place in the 2016 Campeonato Brasileiro Série A. He was fired on June 4, 2017, following a 1-0 loss to rivals Corinthians on the road and the team’s general bad run wining just three points out of twelve.

Dorival is going to have a challenging task to turn around Brazil’s current inconsistencies and also develop strategies to push the team to the top of the table in the South American 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.
