Ruud van Nistelrooy rejoined Manchester United’s backroom staff in order to assist Erik ten Hag.
Former United striker Van Nistelrooy is joined by former Go Ahead Eagles manager Rene Hake. The two assume the responsibilities vacated by Benni McCarthy and Mitchell van der Gaag, the leaving coaches.
Ten Hag announced in a statement that Steve McClaren and Darren Fletcher will continue to be a member of his coaching staff, saying, “I am delighted that Rene and Ruud have agreed to join our project, adding a wealth of experience, knowledge, and new energy to the staff.”
“Now is a good time to refresh the coaching team as we look to build on the achievements of the past two years and push to the next level.”
Van Nistelrooy played five years at Old Trafford, where he scored 150 goals in just 219 games. He managed PSV Eindhoven in the 2022–2023 season and was in talks to accept the Burnley post before to United’s successful pursuit. Hake will be Ten Hag’s direct right-hand man, and the 48-year-old fan favourite is anticipated to work mostly with United’s forwards, just like McCarthy did.
Hake, 52, and United manager Ten Hag have had similar career paths, having led Utrecht and the Go Ahead Eagles. Hake guided the Go Ahead Eagles to their highest finish in over 15 years last season, finishing ninth in the Eredivisie.
