Following a preliminary inquiry, the troopers concluded that the Freightliner was travelling northward and the Tacoma was travelling south. The Tacoma eventually veered to the right and off the road, crossing the yellow lines and colliding with the Freightliner. After that, the Tacoma kept going north on the road until veering off and into a wooded area by way of an embankment.

The inquiry by the Maryland State Police is still underway. The Northern Garrett Rescue Squad, Grantsville Fire Department, and Maryland Natural Resources Police all provided assistance to the officers on the site.
