Seven people were killed and 51 injured in a 34-vehicle pile-up on the M5 in Somerset, and police believe the death toll could climb.
Officers said Friday night’s incident, which occurred near junction 25 northbound at around 20:30 GMT, resulted in a “massive fireball” at the scene.
The cause of the crash is unknown, however the road was damp and hazy in spots.
Those concerned about relatives who may have been involved in the accident can phone 0800 092 0410.
Earlier reports stated more than ten people were believed to have died, and officials said some bodies had still to be retrieved from the burnt vehicles.
