Norfolk Fire Rescue, Naval Regional Fire and Hampton Fire Rescue responded to a truck fire on Interstate 64 Eastbound at the HRBT.
NORFOLK, Virginia — Many lanes on the Hampton Roads Bridge Tunnel (HRBT) were closed for more than five hours due to a vehicle fire, long into the evening rush hour.
A truck fire on Interstate 64 Eastbound at the HRBT was responded to by Norfolk Fire Rescue, Naval Regional Fire, and Hampton Fire Rescue. Hazardous materials units were called for assistance at 11:39 a.m., according to Norfolk Fire Rescue.
According to officials, no injuries have been reported.
They also advise motorists to expect major delays as all eastbound lanes were closed for several hours.
Shortly before 5 p.m. VDOT said a lane was reopened but the eastbound right lane and right shoulder remained closed but then a little after 8 p.m., all eastbound lanes were shut down again for nearly an hour “due to an incident”. VDOT did not elaborate on what that incident was or if it was connected to the earlier vehicle fire.
As of 9 p.m. traffic was once again slowly moving for motorists heading from Hampton to Norfolk, but with the right lane and right shoulder were still closed.
All lanes on I-64 East at the Hampton Roads Bridge Tunnel have since been reopened.
