Daniel Kelly, a midfielder for Celtic, looks to be leaving the organisation after turning down a new contract offer. As a result, he might not be included in the first team’s preseason plans. The 18-year-old can now negotiate terms with other teams since his contract expires in January.
“There’s no impasse as Daniel has been offered a deal which is valued,” Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers said in response to SunSport. “With the utmost respect, I have worked with young players and I know the levels of young players and where they’re at from a technical perspective and a financial perspective.” The club has made deals offers to both of those boys.
Kelly’s decision to decline the proposed contract came soon after Rocco Vata, another young Celtic player, made the same decision to not extend his contract. Fans are worried that the team won’t be able to keep its young players given this habit of leaving.
Kelly’s future at Celtic now appears grim, even though he broke into the first squad this year and scored his first goal as a senior in a 7-1 thumping of Dundee. The midfield player’s decision might have been influenced by his little playing time in the championship game.
Kelly’s contract expires in January, thus the midfield player is free to consider offers from other teams.
Kelly’s exclusion was confirmed by Rodgers, who said, “A few months ago, I spoke with the player and the agents and told them that it’s going to be difficult to be with the club during preseason if we can’t get this resolved by the summer. That is all there is to it.
Kelly might decide to follow in Vata’s footsteps and look for better chances outside of Celtic, possibly on more benevolent terms.
