Alvaro Morata looks to be on his way out of Atletico Madrid to AC Milan, but it turns out that this may not be the only transaction the Spanish team does with an Italian team in the upcoming weeks. One of Diego Simeone’s most valued younger players, Rodrigo Riquelme, is a guy that Roma is hoping to acquire.
Roma still believes they can do a deal, despite Riquelme’s happiness at Atleti and his entourage’s assurances that the 24-year-old has no ambitions to leave this summer, according to La Gazetta dello Sport (via MD).
Roma think they can get Riquelme change his mind for two key reasons. First of all, unlike at Atleti, they intend to give him a regular starting position. Simeone rarely utilises him in midfield and typically places Samuel Lino ahead of him at left wing-back.
It’s also important to remember that Roma would use him in his natural position going ahead.
Second, Riquelme’s pay will be tripled by Roma. He is currently one of the lowest paid players in Atleti’s first team, making a pitiful €400k a year.
Whether Roma can entice Riquelme to relocate to the Italian city this summer is still up in the air. If Atletico Madrid were to consider a sale, they would need to receive a sizable offer that was far over €20 million.
