South Wimbledon/Merton High Street crash: Medical episode

Police have announced that a man has died after a medical episode which caused a crash with a lamppost near South Wimbledon tube station today.

Paramedics and police were called to reports of a crash at around 10am this morning at the junction of Morden Road and Merton High Street. London Ambulance Service sent ambulance crews, paramedics in fast response cars, an advanced paramedic and an incident response officer. They first arrived on scene in under six minutes, but the driver was pronounced dead at the scene.

Now that the Metropolitan Police have confirmed it, the cause of his death is thought to have been a medical crisis unrelated to the incident.

Road closures are still in place in parts while the site is cleared, and his family has been notified.

“Police were called at approximately 10:00hrs on Monday to reports of a car in collision with a lamppost in Morden Road, at the junction with Merton High Street, SW19,” a Metropolitan Police spokesperson stated.

London Ambulance Service and officers were present.

The male driver of the car was declared dead at the spot; it is thought that his death was unrelated to the incident and the result of a medical episode.

“Notification has been sent to the kin.

“Road closures continue while the situation is handled.”

“We were called at 10:04 this morning to reports of a road traffic collision at the Junction of Morden Road Merton High Street, SW19,” a spokesman for the London Ambulance Service stated.

“We dispatched resources to the scene, including ambulance crews, paramedics in fast response cars, an advanced paramedic and incident response officer.

“Our first paramedic was on the scene in under 6 minutes.

“Sadly, a person was pronounced dead at the scene.”
