A massive 10,000-bee colony found dwelling within a London pub’s ceiling was uncovered.
The massive nest was found as the soon-to-open Leyton Engineer bar in Waltham Forest was being restored. The bees were thought to have resided there for a minimum of ten years. Remarkable Pubs purchased the once-known Leyton Technical Pub last year, and it is currently undergoing a significant makeover.
When the new management of the pub took over the project, they knew about the bees since they could hear buzzing and saw them flying around. However, when they learnt of the size of the nest, Remarkable Pubs creative director Jake Miller, 58, was taken aback.
“When we opened up the ceiling, it was definitely not what we were expecting,” stated Jake. We had only seen a few bees at that moment, and the nest is enormous, spanning the entire room.” Three days were needed for a group of workers to completely remove the bees. “It’s been a big job, but it got sorted pretty quickly,” stated Jake.
“The bee people arrived and collected the bees to take them to a secure location. There is less probability of another nest because all the lava and honeycomb have to be removed.” Jake and his restoration crew still have work to do to keep the nest from growing again, so they’re not quite finished yet.
“We still need to make sure it’s completely cleaned and sealed,” stated Jake. Some straggler bees will inevitably find their way back to the ceiling and try to repair the nest. It is crucial that we make sure it is appropriately boarded up and cleaned up because of this.”
A large amount of honey residue has been left behind by the bees, which Jake hopes they may bottle and sell as Leyton Engineer Honey. Jake remarked, “Having some real, home-grown honey in the middle of London would be really nice.” With what we still have, I hope we can pull that off.”
