Western Road Community Primary School are mourning the loss of a key member of staff, Mrs Cris Winter. She passed away on July 14 from cancer, at the age of 67.
Cris Winter had a significant role in the school community. Cris witnessed numerous changes over her amazing 35 years as the school’s administrator, including a number of headteachers, employees, and governors.
When Western Road Community Primary School moved back to its original location on Western Road in Lewes in October 1988, Cris began working there. Subsequently, the school expanded and relocated to its current location across from the Grange Gardens on Southover High Street in Lewes.
Cris assisted more than a thousand kids and their families with school adjustment during her 35 years in the position. She always kept an extra uniform, plimsolls, water bottles, and numerous other “just in case” items in one of her numerous cabinets. We frequently observed kids playing with lions and tigers to help calm any tensions, and having peaceful conversations and much-needed attention with Cris, who had a box of toys, teddies, and stories in her office. Keeping plasters and ice packs close at hand, she discovered that a glass of special water—cold from the water cooler—was frequently the most effective remedy and could cure the majority of illnesses.
