A prominent NHS hospital doctor has been identified as the driver who died after his car drove off a bridge and onto a motorway.
A hospital spokesperson confirmed that Dr Nick Payne died when his Audi crashed into the M3 at the Ravenswood Roundabout in Camberley on Tuesday.
At approximately 5:25 p.m., his automobile collided with a concrete barrier and fell from a bridge before landing on the southbound traffic of the motorway near junction four.
Surrey Police reported that, despite paramedics’ best attempts, the driver of the vehicle, a male in his 50s, was pronounced deceased on the spot.
Nick Payne, a well renowned former chief of Frimley Park Hospital’s emergency department in Camberley, has received heartfelt condolences following the unfortunate tragedy.
Dr Payne was working as an emergency department consultant at the time but had previously been the chief of service for the emergency department at Frimley Park for six years.
A spokesperson for Frimley Park Hospital said: ‘We have had to make the very sad announcement to our staff today (Wednesday, October 2) that our well-respected colleague, Nick Payne, Emergency Department Consultant, died yesterday (Tuesday, October 1) in a road traffic collision.’
Flowers at the scene – as well as touching social media posts – paid tribute to Dr Payne, calling him a dear friend and mentor who will be remembered for his ‘smile, waistcoats and banter’.
Surrey Police are urging those who witnessed the crash to come forward. They are particularly keen to trace the movements of a black BMW I3 prior to the collision.
