MK Dons have finalised the season-long loan signing of Nico Lawrence from Southampton, capping off an aggressive window.
Last season, the 21-year-old played just five games for Colchester United on a similar deal as the Saints. However, his time at the JobServe Community Stadium was cut short when he sustained an unlucky injury.
Lawrence has played over 30 times in the academy during his tenure at Southampton, however he has yet to make a senior appearance since joining in February 2022. The defender appeared 22 appearances for Torquay United during five months in 2023, winning the National League South’s Young Player of the Season accolade.
After impressing in the transfer window, MK Dons have increased their total incomings to 11. Lawrence has joined the new-look group for training ahead of Saturday’s home game against Plymouth Argyle.
Lawrence was asked about his newest move to the Dons, and he responded:
“I got down with Russell Martin for 20-30 minutes to discuss my alternatives and what would work best for me and help me develop the most, and it was plainly MK!
“The style of play is something that excites me a lot, it’s similar to Southampton’s style of football, I can’t wait to kick-start and get going!”
Williamson, who has been in charge of the League Two team since October 2023, praised his new addition when questioned about his potential influence on the squad.
“Nico is a highly rated young player who had a few options this summer, so I’m delighted he chose to come here, and Southampton have put their trust in us to continue his development.” He has the ball skills and vision to be a valuable asset to our defence, but he also has the physicality to play in League Two; we’re delighted to have him.”
Lawrence’s loan move to MK Dons, which aligns with Southampton’s tactical approach, will provide him with valuable game time and experience. It will also help the Dons improve their chances of promotion to League One. The 21-year-old will be hopeful for a future with the Saints’ first team, as Williamson has praised him.
