A guy who was critically injured after being hit by a car had previously been assaulted, police said.
On Tuesday, just before 20:00 GMT, emergency workers responded to reports of a pedestrian colliding with a blue BMW on Wath Road in Mexborough.
South Yorkshire Police reported that the 34-year-old victim had been assaulted earlier that evening.
The police said they wanted to hear from witnesses or anyone with dashcam evidence.
A man has been arrested after the accident.
On Tuesday, at 6.10 p.m., police were dispatched to Greens Way in Mexborough in response to reports of a significant collision involving two cars, a Ford and a Peugeot, and one pedestrian.
The pedestrian, a 75-year-old male, was treated by an ambulance but died on the scene.
The 23-year-old driver of the Ford fled the scene but was later arrested on charges of causing death by careless driving, failing to stop, and driving while impaired by alcohol or drugs. He remains in police detention.
