Man arrested after allegedly assaulting police officer with ‘bladed article’ in Gateshead

After reportedly attacking a police officer in Gateshead, a man has been placed under custody.

The man, who appeared to be in his 50s, was allegedly operating a car that was pulled up by police near Leam Lane. At about 3:50 p.m., according to Northumbria Police, officers were notified about a car of interest.

According to the police complaint, the individual in question then used a “bladed article” to attack a male officer, injuring his arm. After that, he ran away on foot but was apprehended on Gateshead’s Rodsley Avenue.

According to police, there is no greater threat to the community and this is an isolated event. Officers requested the public to refrain from speculating, especially on the internet, and stated that investigations were still underway.

“Just after 3.50 p.m. today (Thursday), officers were alerted to a vehicle of interest in the Leam Lane area of Gateshead,” a Northumbria Police spokesperson stated.

“The driver struck a male police officer with a bladed object after stopping the vehicle, injuring his arm. The driver ran away from the incident but was apprehended shortly after in the Gateshead neighbourhood of Rodsley Avenue.



“A man in his 50s was taken into police custody after being apprehended in relation to the event. Officers are treating this as a singular event and believe there is no threat to the public, even though investigations are still in their early stages.”
