A flood alert has been issued for parts of West London after torrential rain swept the city. The Environment Agency says flooding is a possibility in the areas between Putney Bridge and Teddington today (Saturday, August 24). This means low-lying roads and pavements along parts of the Thames could be submerged, although homes are not currently at risk. A high tide of 4.7m above sea level is expected at 6.45pm this evening. In particular, the Environment Agency has pinpointed the following places where flooding is possible today:
Chiswick Mall and Strand on the Green
Thames Bank at Mortlake
Ranelagh Drive
Friars Lane and Water Lane
Riverside and The Embankment at Twickenham
Towpath below Teddington Lock
This afternoon’s heavy rain is expected to ease by about 2 pm, with showers sporadically expected throughout the afternoon before sunny weather returns at 6 pm. As Notting Hill Carnival gets underway tomorrow, Sunday, August 25, sunny weather will fully return. The Met Office predicts that next week’s weather will be excellent, with temperatures reaching 26 C. James Madden of Exacta Weather says that temperatures will rise to the late 20s or even 31–32C in a mini-heatwave. Madden further states :
WX Charts maps suggest Wednesday afternoon (August 28) will be the peak of this, with the mercury pushing close to 30C in eastern, central and southern parts of the UK.
The Met Office also believes “very warm” or “hot” conditions could be on the way next week, although it remains unclear how long those conditions will last. The Met Office forecast for August 28 to September 6 states: “Initially dry and very warm across central and eastern areas, perhaps hot for a time, while cloudier with some patchy rain in western parts.
“Later in the week a trend towards less-hot conditions is likely as a more pronounced westerly flow becomes established, although exactly how long it remains very warm or hot in the east is uncertain.”
