With a move for Filip Jorgensen nearly finalised, Chelsea is speeding towards their sixth summer acquisition. However, it has surfaced that Enzo Maresca, the manager, was not initially keen to sign the Villarreal custodian, preferring to sign a Leicester star. Meanwhile, Everton is prepared to make another attempt to convince an unwanted Blues star to leave.
On Monday, the 22-year-old custodian will travel to the United States to have a medical with Chelsea. Should everything proceed according to plan, Jorgensen will join Tosin Adarabioyo, Omari Kellyman, Estevao Willian, Marc Guiu, and Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall as the sixth summer addition under new manager Maresca.
In order to secure the Denmark U21 international, who is anticipated to ink a long-term contract with the south-west London team, the Blues will pay Villarreal a sum of €24.5 million (£20.7 million).
The 24-year-old Djordje Petrovic is expected to be sold despite the fact that he made 34 appearances in all competitions last season. Jorgensen is anticipated to start for Chelsea right away in the upcoming season, competing with Robert Sanchez for the starting position.
Chelsea transfers: Jorgensen was not Maresca’s first choice
It has subsequently been revealed, though, that Maresca had other options. According to rumours from Norway, the Blues manager really considered a move for Leicester keeper Mads Hermansen as a first option. Jorgensen was not Maresca’s first choice.
Maresca knows a lot about the 24-year-old because he coached him during their championship season at King Power Stadium the previous year.
The Danish player, who is well-known for his ball-playing abilities, seemed like the ideal fit for Maresca’s style at Stamford Bridge. According to Danish publication Bold, Chelsea even reached out to the Foxes to negotiate a price for the player.
But, Leicester was unwilling to let another star easily reconnect with their previous boss after snagging Dewsbury-Hall this summer, and they shocked the Blues with a £40 million demand.
Chelsea decided it was far too high and pursued their original interest in Jorgensen, signing the Villarreal custodian for almost half of what was offered for Hermansen.
