KNOXVILLE, TN — May 14, 2025

In a moment that marks the end of an era, Phillip Fulmer, the iconic figure synonymous with Tennessee Volunteers football, bid an emotional farewell to the program and its fans during a heartfelt ceremony at Neyland Stadium on Tuesday. Fulmer, who first joined the Tennessee program as a player in the late 1960s and later ascended to become one of the most revered head coaches in college football history, officially stepped away from the university, capping off a career spanning over five decades.

The event drew former players, staff, university officials, and thousands of fans, all gathered to honor a man whose name has become woven into the fabric of Tennessee athletics. Fulmer, 74, fought back tears as he addressed the crowd, thanking the Volunteer faithful for their unwavering support through the highs and lows of his career.

“This university, this stadium, this family—this is home,” Fulmer said during his farewell speech. “Tennessee gave me purpose, a platform, and most importantly, it gave me all of you. From my days wearing the orange jersey to the years I spent coaching on these sidelines, I’ve cherished every moment.”

Fulmer’s legacy at Tennessee is unmatched. As head coach from 1992 to 2008, he led the Vols to a national championship in 1998, 152 wins, and two SEC titles. Known for his steady leadership and strong recruiting ties, Fulmer established Tennessee as a perennial powerhouse in college football. After stepping down as head coach, he returned to serve as athletic director from 2017 to 2021, helping stabilize the department during a period of turmoil.

In recent years, Fulmer remained a close advisor and ambassador for the university, mentoring young coaches and supporting athletic programs across the board. However, in announcing his complete retirement from official roles, Fulmer stated that it was time to pass the torch and embrace the next chapter of his life.

“I’ll always be a Volunteer,” Fulmer assured the crowd. “But now, I look forward to being a fan in the stands, cheering alongside you all. This isn’t goodbye; it’s simply a thank you.”

University of Tennessee Chancellor Donde Plowman praised Fulmer for his commitment to excellence and his impact on generations of student-athletes.

“Coach Fulmer’s leadership extended far beyond the football field,” Plowman said. “He exemplified what it means to be a Volunteer—through integrity, resilience, and dedication. We owe him more than we can ever express.”

Numerous former players also took to the stage to share personal anecdotes and express their gratitude. Peyton Manning, the legendary quarterback who played under Fulmer in the mid-1990s, delivered a video message lauding his former coach’s guidance and influence.

“Coach Fulmer shaped my career and, more importantly, shaped me as a person,” Manning said. “His belief in his players and his relentless commitment to the team made us better men.”

Fans packed the stadium despite rainy weather, many donning orange and white in tribute. Chants of “Thank you, Coach!” echoed throughout the event, highlighting the deep bond Fulmer shares with the Volunteer fan base. The ceremony concluded with a video montage of his career highlights, followed by the university officially dedicating the newly named “Phillip Fulmer Plaza” at the stadium’s entrance—a lasting tribute to his enduring legacy.

For many, Fulmer’s retirement is a poignant reminder of the golden era of Tennessee football. Yet even in his departure, Fulmer remains a symbol of pride, perseverance, and the Volunteer spirit.

As Fulmer exited the stadium, he paused to take in one final view of the field where so many memories were made.

“I’ll always remember the roar of this crowd, the pride in wearing the Power T, and the honor of leading this team,” he said. “My heart will always be in Knoxville.”

With Fulmer’s departure, Tennessee closes a monumental chapter in its storied football history—but the legend of Phillip Fulmer will live on in the hearts of Vols

fans for generations to come.
