IMMORTALIZING A LEGEND: TEXAS TECH TO HONOR ICONIC COACH BOB KNIGHT WITH BRONZE STATUE
LUBBOCK, Texas – In a historic tribute to one of college basketball’s most influential figures, Texas Tech University has announced plans to unveil a life-size bronze statue of legendary coach Bob Knight. The statue will stand proudly outside United Supermarkets Arena, forever commemorating Knight’s monumental impact on the Red Raiders basketball program and the university’s athletic legacy.
The announcement was made during a press conference held by Texas Tech President Lawrence Schovanec and Athletic Director Kirby Hocutt, who described the statue as a “permanent symbol of excellence, discipline, and tradition” that Coach Knight brought to Lubbock. The unveiling is scheduled for early 2026, coinciding with the 25th anniversary of Knight’s arrival at Texas Tech.
“Coach Knight did more than just win games — he transformed our program, brought national attention to Texas Tech basketball, and instilled a culture of accountability and toughness that still resonates today,” Hocutt said. “This statue is a way to ensure that his legacy is honored for generations of Red Raiders to come.”
Knight, who passed away in November 2023 at the age of 83, remains one of the most revered and controversial figures in college basketball history. Before arriving in Lubbock, he cemented his name in the record books with three NCAA championships at Indiana University. In 2001, Knight took the reins at Texas Tech, revitalizing the program and guiding the Red Raiders to multiple postseason appearances, including a memorable run to the Sweet 16 in 2005.
Beyond the wins and accolades, Knight’s tenure at Texas Tech is remembered for the renewed energy and respect he brought to the program. Known for his tough-love coaching style, unmatched basketball IQ, and fierce loyalty to his players, Knight created a winning culture that continues to inspire coaches and athletes alike.
Sculpted by renowned artist Larry Nowlan, known for his lifelike depictions of sports icons, the statue will depict Knight in his classic coaching stance — arms crossed, eyes focused, exuding the intensity that made him a legend. University officials say the design was chosen to reflect both the coach’s larger-than-life persona and the values he instilled in his players: discipline, preparation, and determination.
Former players and colleagues have voiced their support for the tribute. “He was more than a coach to us,” said Andre Emmett, a former Red Raider star. “He pushed us to be better men, not just better athletes. This statue means everything to those of us who had the privilege to play for him.”
The initiative is being funded through a combination of private donations and university support. A public fundraising campaign will launch this summer, allowing alumni, fans, and community members to contribute to the tribute.
As Texas Tech prepares to enshrine the memory of Coach Knight in bronze, the message is clear: legends never fade.
