The collision that claimed the life of a motorcycle rider in south Calgary on Wednesday night is still being looked into by Calgary police.
At 6:45 p.m., emergency personnel were called to a collision on Macleod Trail near 99 Avenue SW involving a car and a motorcycle, according to Calgary police and CityNews.
A guy in his 80s was driving a 2013 Hyundai Accent north on Macleod Trail when it attempted to turn west on 99 Avenue SW.
The car’s driver pulled into the intersection, waiting for oncoming traffic to clear before attempting to make a turn.
Meanwhile, a 28-year-old guy was riding a 2024 BMW S 1000 RR motorbike south on Macleod in the right lane as it approached 99 Avenue.
According to the police, the motorbike struck the Hyundai as its driver attempted to turn, throwing the rider from his bike.
On the spot, he was pronounced dead. The car’s driver was taken to the hospital with only minor wounds.
Although speed is being looked into as a potential issue, alcohol and drugs are not thought to have played a role in the collision.
Up until one in the morning, Macleod between Southland Drive and Willow Park Drive SE was closed in both directions.
Anyone with dashcam footage, dashcam footage, or any other information related to the collision is requested to report it anonymously to Crimestoppers or call Calgary police at 403-266-1234.
