A drunk driver who murdered one passenger and critically injured another following a seven-hour drinking spree was sentenced to eight and a half years in prison.
Keegan Edgell, 20, was murdered and Thomas Boothroyd, 28, was seriously injured after Daniel Crawshaw lost control of his BMW coupe and collided with a wall near Huddersfield.
According to police, Crawshaw had drunk ten drinks prior to the incident.
He was jailed on Monday after pleading guilty to causing the tragedy.
West Yorkshire Police said Crawshaw, of Staincross in Barnsley, had been drinking in Holmfirth and Huddersfield.
According to the police, at one point throughout the night, he boasted about his plan to drive home, even presenting his car keys to a gathering of individuals.
The following morning, he veered off the road and into a wall on the B6108 Huddersfield Road in South Crosland, killing Ms Edgell and injuring Mr Boothroyd.
A witness at the scene reported Crawshaw exiting the vehicle and approaching them, but made no mention of the gravely injured passengers in his automobile.
The police released footage showing Crawshaw “clearly heavily intoxicated” and speaking on the phone to a family member.
Following the sentencing, Det Con Clare Barran stated, “This tragic incident was completely avoidable.” Crawshaw chose to drink and drive that night, fully understanding that he would have been over the limit.”
Crawshaw was imprisoned after pleading guilty to causing death and serious harm through careless driving. He will also be barred from driving for two years after his release.
