The car a man was driving when he died in a collision with a truck was stolen and had cloned license plates.
The 51-year-old was killed when the silver Peugeot 107 collided with the lorry on the A326 in Totton, at the intersection with Monkton Lane, at 03:15 BST.
According to Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary, a second car may have been in the vicinity at the time of the incident but left before officers arrived.
It stated that the Peugeot was stolen from Fordingbridge parking park.
The A326 was shut between the A35 and Fletchwood Road for about 12 hours but reopened at about 15:00.
