A coroner said that an 86-year-old driver who died in a ‘low speed’ two-car crash in Shrewsbury had most likely suffered a medical crisis while driving.
An inquest heard that Michael Alan Haylett’s Audi A3 had crossed the middle line of Longden Road, collided with an approaching Audi Q2, spun around, hit the curb, lost a wheel, and flipped over onto its side and roof.
Mr Haylett, of Castle Street in Shrewsbury, died from multiple catastrophic injuries at the scene of the incident on July 30, 2024.
A post-mortem examination was performed at Royal Shrewsbury Hospital by Dr Ellen Cobby, a consultant histopathologist. She determined that the injuries were “not compatible with life”.
They may have included an injury caused by the vehicle’s air bag deploying at 300 mph, she stated.
