A automobile driver had to be cut free from his vehicle and evacuated to the hospital after suffering a suspected medical crisis behind the wheel and colliding with the A5.
The dual carriageway between Telford and Shrewsbury was closed in both directions for many hours on Tuesday morning after a man exited the westbound road just before 6.30 a.m.
The driver was evacuated to Stoke Hospital by air ambulance after suffering critical injuries.
Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service reported receiving a call about a single-vehicle collision on the westbound carriageway between Wellington and Shrewsbury at around 6.36am on Tuesday. Fire crews from Shrewsbury, Telford Central and Wellington station attended the scene, and worked to free the driver who was trapped in the vehicle. The man was later taken to the hospital by the Midlands Air Ambulance.
A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokeswoman said: “Upon arrival, we discovered a man who was the car’s driver and is suspected to have suffered a medical event while driving. The fire service extricated him from the vehicle.
“After being extricated, he was checked by EMS personnel and got advanced trauma care on the scene for significant injuries. He was transported to Royal Stoke University Hospital by air ambulance for additional treatment.”
At around 8 a.m., a fire service representative stated that the road was closed in both directions between Junction 7 and Preston Island to allow the air ambulance to land.
By 9 a.m., the eastbound lane was reopened, and 20 minutes later, National Highways reported that the road was open in both directions.
A spokesperson for West Mercia Police stated, “We were called to a single vehicle collision on the A5, between junction 7 to the M54 and the Preston roundabout in Shrewsbury, at around 6.20am this morning (Tuesday, August 6).”
“One man has been taken to hospital via air ambulance.”
After the route was restored, National Highways warned road users of delays of roughly 60 minutes over the regular travel time and around four miles.
