A 64-YEAR-OLD man died after suffering what is considered to be a medical episode while driving.

According to earlier reports, the St Helens Linkway was closed in both directions due to a significant traffic collision.

The event was reported to be a one-vehicle collision in which a white Renault box van mounted the grass central reservation near the intersection of St Helens Linkway (now known as James Roby Way) and Sherdley Road.

Police suspect the van’s driver suffered a medical incident, and his death has been verified.

Following the incident, police are looking for witnesses or motorists with dashcams at the St Helens Linkway or Scorecross roundabout soon before 10 a.m. today.

Police believe the Renault van stood out owing to its rear tail lift and orange livery on the front and sides.

Detective Sergeant Simon Duffy of the Serious Collision Investigation Unit said, “Our thoughts and condolences are with the family of a 64-year-old man who tragically died this morning.”

“We have initiated an investigation into his death, and his next of kin have been notified. They are assisted by our specially qualified liaison officers.

“We are asking motorists who were driving along the Linkway at the time and observed the vehicle soon before the incident or watched it coming to a stop to please contact us.

“I would want to request that you check your dashcam footage to see if it may have captured the incident, which may help with the inquiry.

“Every piece information is vitally important to our investigation to establish what happened.”

Anyone who witnessed the collision or captured anything on CCTV or dashcam is asked to contact the police’s serious crime unit on (0151) 777 5747, or email SCIU@merseyside.police.uk.
