A 24-year-old Newport woman died in a one-vehicle crash on Magor Road, which has been closed since just after midnight. Another female passenger in the car was taken to hospital for treatment.
A 34-year-old Newport driver was arrested on suspicion of death by dangerous driving and is currently in custody, according to police.
The crash occurred on the B4245 Magor Road near Langstone, Newport, at around 12.05am. Officers, the Welsh Ambulance Service, and the South Wales Fire and Rescue Service responded. The car involved was a black Skoda Kamiq Hatchback travelling from Magor.
As of 1.30pm on Wednesday, the road is closed between Langstone Crematorium and the Magor Road junction for Pencoed Lane in Newport.
Gwent Police are now asking anybody who witnessed the incident or has dashcam footage from the B4245 near Langstone between 11.30pm on Tuesday, August 6 and 12.05am on Wednesday, August 7 to contact them. They are also looking for any relevant CCTV footage from junction 23A of the M4, past Magor Brewery and towards the incident site.
