WBTV SALISBURY, N.C. The North Carolina State Highway Patrol reports that in a fatal collision that occurred in Salisbury on Thursday afternoon, a box truck caught fire after hitting an overhead sign.
The deceased was identified as Winston-Salem resident Elemer Lee Carpenter, 84. Carpenter’s box truck was the sole vehicle involved, according to troopers.
The collision occurred on September 19 at approximately 12:15 p.m. on Interstate 85 South close to Exit 72.
According to reports, Carpenter struck an overhead highway sign while driving south when he went off the road into the middle, struck a guardrail, and crossed over it.
Officials reported that following the collision, the car caught fire; Carpenter passed away at the site.
