After reaching an agreement on terms, Brighton midfielder Marc Leonard will complete his transfer to Birmingham City today, sources have informed Football Insider.
The 22-year-old, who was deemed surplus to requirements at Brighton, is expected to sign a four-year contract with the League One team.
With Northampton Town, the Scot enjoyed two outstanding seasons that contributed to the team’s promotion from League Two and subsequent League One status.
Birmingham has had a busy summer as they work to get promoted back to the Championship at the first opportunity.
After signing with the team, Leonard will join Christoph Klarer, Willum Thor Willumsson, Emil Hansson, Alex Cochrane, Ryan Allsop, and Bailey Peacock-Farrell.
Birmingham City set to continue busy summer with Marc Leonard deal
Leonard had a successful academy career despite only making two appearances for the main team since joining Brighton in the summer of 2018 from Scottish outfit Hearts.
Leonard scored six goals from central midfield in 39 games for Brighton’s Under-18s and 40 for their Under-23s while still in their youth system.
The Scottish midfielder went on to make 97 appearances for Northampton Town, where he was crucial to the team’s most recent triumph.
Birmingham was relegated from the Championship the previous season despite having a strong start that saw them finish as high as sixth.
Giving up on John Eustace and selecting Wayne Rooney turned out to be a terrible decision, since the team is currently playing in the third division of English football.
Football Insider reported on July 22 that Brighton is open to accepting a proposal of at least £10 million for Billy Gilmour this summer, suggesting that Leonard may not be the only Scottish midfield player poised to depart.
In other news, negotiations to re-sign Fulham midfielder have begun at Birmingham City.
