‘Deal done’ – Crystal Palace and Newcastle United beaten to £40m transfer by Premier League rivals Fulham

A Premier League rival has purchased the young academy graduate from Arsenal.
Premier League opponents Fulham have signed Arsenal player Emile Smith-Rowe ahead of Crystal Palace and Newcastle United.

Following a breakthrough in discussions this week, the Cottagers have formally announced the midfielder’s arrival from the Gunners; the sum is estimated to be in the region of £40 million. It was reported that Smith-Rowe took a plane back to London after his physical at the Arsenal preseason camp in the United States.
For the 24-year-old, who has been with Arsenal since he was 10 years old in 2010, this is a big change. Although Smith-Rowe struggled to get playing time in recent seasons, he went on to make 115 appearances for the club’s first squad.
Even though the player still had two years left on his contract, it became clear that the North London team was ready to take advantage of him this summer. The Premier League was keenly interested in the player’s services.
Since Crystal Palace lost their own offensive midfielder, Michael Olise, to Bayern Munich this summer, it seemed most likely that the club would compete Fulham for the position. Eberechi Eze is also rumoured to be leaving, and according to The Guardian, Oliver Glasner’s team entered the transfer sweepstakes in July after Fulham made a bid.

Another team that has long been connected to Smith-Rowe’s desire is Newcastle United. This week, NewastleWorld revealed that the player had ‘been monitored’ by the Magpies over the previous 12 months in anticipation of a reported departure.

Smith-Rowe, who only appeared in 13 Premier League games the previous season, will undoubtedly be hoping for greater playing time at Fulham under Marco Silva. “I’m finally here, so I’m really happy for me and my family – it’s a good moment,” he remarked after joining the Cottagers. I really wanted to there as soon as possible so I could start working with my teammates because I’m really enthusiastic.

“After hearing about the project, talking with the manager, and observing the players we already have here, I believe this is an exciting project for me and the best move I can make for my career going forward.”

Tony Khan, the Sporting Director for Fulham, continued, “I’m excited to announce Emile Smith Rowe’s entrance to Fulham Football Club! Emile will be joining the team in Portugal as we continue to get ready for the upcoming season, and we are thrilled to have signed such a gifted young player! Hurry up, Fulham!
