Daniel Sancho Bronchalo, a YouTube chef, is the son of Rodolfo Sancho Aguirre, a prominent Spanish actor.
A plastic surgeon on a Thai vacation island was killed, and the perpetrator, a YouTube chef, was given a life sentence.
The death of Edwin Arrieta Arteaga, a Colombian, on Koh Pha-ngan in southern Thailand last August was found to have been committed by Daniel Sancho Bronchalo.
The 30-year-old Bronchalo is the son of renowned Spanish actor Rodolfo Sancho Aguirre and actress Silvia Bronchalo. Both appeared in court for the decision on Thursday.
Sancho testified during his trial that he defended himself from Mr. Arteaga’s attempted sexual attack.
He stated that following a fight, the 44-year-old fell, struck his head on a bathtub, lost consciousness, and ultimately passed away.
Although he acknowledged dismembering the body and dumping the parts at sea and on land, he had denied planning the crime.
Prosecutors argued that Sancho’s purchase of a knife, rubber gloves, waste bags, and cleaning supplies at a convenience store prior to Arrieta’s death supported the case of planned murder, based on surveillance footage that the police were able to collect.
According to the police, Sancho had confessed to the murder and stated that he had planned it because Mr. Arteaga had threatened to expose their supposed sexual relationship, which would bring shame upon him and his family.
According to the Spanish newspaper El País, Sancho expressed regret for his acts to the court during his closing statement earlier in his trial.
“I am sorry that a life has been lost and that parents have lost a son,” Sancho stated. “I apologise that his family was unable to give him a fitting funeral. I apologise for my actions following the death.”
He was sentenced to four months in prison for hiding or causing damage to a body; however, because of his confession, his term was halved.
In addition, he entered a not guilty plea to the allegation of destroying the victim’s passport, for which he was sentenced to two years in jail.
Due to Sancho’s cooperation during the trial, the Koh Samui provincial court modified his initial death sentence to life in prison, according to the police.
The case’s components—violent death on a vacation island, celebrity ties, and graphic details—made it a sensation in Spain, inspiring HBO to create a documentary on the events in Spanish.
According to the victim’s family attorney Bussakorn Kaewleeled, they were happy with the result.
Bussakorn stated to reporters outside of court: “The plaintiff is satisfied with the sentence because he [Sancho] will be put in prison for life and they [the plaintiff] receive some financial compensation.”
