Careless driving killed eight months old child in Bicester

A 70-year-old woman has admitted to causing the death of a baby girl by driving dangerously outside hospital in Bicester.

Bridget Carole Curtis, of Begelly, appeared in Swansea Crown Court on Friday morning and admitted to the charge of the death of eight-month-old Mabli Cariad Hall.

Mabli died of serious traumatic brain damage after being hit by a white BMW while in her pram at the front door of Withybush Hospital in Pembrokeshire, west Wales.

She was airlifted to the University Hospital of Wales in Cardiff and later transferred to Bristol Royal Hospital for Children, where she died in the early hours of the morning.

Judge Geraint Walters granted Curtis unconditional bail ahead of her sentencing hearing at Swansea Crown Court.

The judge barred Curtis from driving and ordered psychiatric and pre-sentence reports before the hearing.

He reminded her, “You’ve undoubtedly figured out by now that granting bail and requesting reports have no bearing on the penalty that may be imposed on you.

“You can have your bail until the day of sentence.”

Curtis’ attorney, John Dye, stated that his client was 70 years old, had a full, clean driver’s license, and had no prior convictions.

He told the court, “She is absolutely devastated to be here.”

Mr Dye stated that Curtis, who was accused with causing death by hazardous driving in July, had voluntarily relinquished her driver’s license.

At the time of her arrest, Mabli’s family described the previous year as “the most horrendous time of our lives” in a statement made by Dyfed-Powys Police.

They elaborated: “Every day is a day of pain for us, even now, but as parents we still have to give the love and support our other children need as they are still trying to come to terms with losing their baby sister.”

They thanked police for their work on the case, and the 2Wish charity for assisting them as a family.

An inquest opening in July last year heard that Mabli died from severe traumatic brain injuries.

Curtis will next appear before Swansea Crown Court for sentence on September 30.
