Be vigilant: Rate of stolen motorbikes in Cheltenham

After many moped and motorcycle thefts in the town, Cheltenham police are urging locals to exercise caution.

Since August 23, 17 reports of moped and motorcycle thefts, as well as reports of attempted thefts, suspicious activities, and individuals riding in an unsafe or unpredictable way, have been made.

Officers have been looking into the occurrences in a variety of ways, including by looking over CCTV footage, going on extra patrols, and going house to home.

A member of the public stated that two 12-year-old boys were arrested earlier this month on suspicion of stealing and reckless driving, but they were later released on bond after the incident. The moped was reportedly stashed behind a Hatherley shop. Officers retrieved the car when it was discovered through inquiries that it had been reported stolen.

The Neighbourhood Policing Team is requesting that anyone with footage or information that they believe could be useful in identifying the perpetrators of the thefts get in touch with them by filling out the online form and referencing incident 352 of September 10.

“Criminals are quick to exploit any opportunity they are presented with, so I would urge motorists to ensure their mopeds and motorbikes are securely locked and parked in well-lit areas where possible,” said Inspector Steve Benbow of the Neighbourhood Policing Team.

By taking these precautions, you can lessen the likelihood that someone may steal your car:

1) Keep your key fob and any extras inside a faraday pouch or box, or other key signal blocker pouch.

2) Keep your keys out of reach of the front or rear doors.

3) Take into account utilizing more conventional techniques for preventing crime, like installing security lighting, a CCTV system, and a steering wheel lock or clamp.

4) The wireless signal may be disabled on some keys; check your owner’s handbook or get in touch with the manufacturer.

5) Use defensive parking, such as pulling up next to a wall or letting someone else block your path, or, if you have one, park in your garage.

6) You can install a tracker on your car, or if you’re purchasing a new car, inquire at the dealership about the price of turning on the factory-installed system..
