Alan Browne moved to Sunderland this summer with the intention of stepping outside of his “comfort zone.”
With his decision not to sign a new contract at Deepdale, Browne’s ten and a half years at Preston North End came to an end. At the Stadium of Light, Browne signed a three-year contract, making Sunderland his second senior club.
In addition to talks with the new manager, Régis Le Bris, Browne was very interested in the opportunity to attempt something different at one of the biggest clubs in England. He spoke candidly with our sister publication, the Sunderland Echo, about his decision to join the Black Cats.
“To be honest, the hardest part was not the change itself,” he remarked. Every possible scenario. But I’ve been here since day one, and the wonderful folks at the club make things a little bit easier for me. After spending so much time at Preston, I had practically become a part of the staff, so it was a major decision, and one that I’m delighted with thus far.
Ten years is a long time, and even if you’re happy and established, I didn’t want things to get too simple. I’ve never ventured out on my own. I’ve never really batted an eyelid at any attention because I’ve always been happy at Preston. I had the want to do something new, venture out of my comfort zone, and see if I could assist this squad advance.
“I believe that you want to start off strong wherever you start, and this is no different. I believe that after spending so much time at a club, patrons develop this impression. I had a great time at Preston and I believe I was well-liked by most of the fans. However, when things are moving
On the other hand, it’s critical to start over when you move somewhere new since that’s how you’ll be assessed, not your prior experiences or years of life. It’s a fresh start with new perspectives. I’m excited to see how well I perform, and I hope that fans will warm up to me immediately.
“I met him before I signed; I think the club were in touch before he was actually appointed,” Browne continued in his conversation with Le Bris. “But I did want to wait until the coach came in because you don’t want to end up somewhere where the coach doesn’t like you or you don’t like the coach,” Browne said.
“I felt it was critical to have that discussion as soon as possible and confirm that the player was being signed by the coach as well as the club. We talked for quite some time about his playing style, what he expects from me, and what I may anticipate from him. So far, he’s demonstrated that. It’s been excellent and really intense. He has ensured that the guys are training well.
