A Worcester homeless charity is teaming up with a college to provide food or monetary donations for lunches in its day centre.

In order to allow students from the Heart of Worcestershire College’s SEN department to prepare weekly lunches at its Worcester day centre, Maggs Day Centre is looking for sponsors.

According to Melissa Blewitt, the charity’s manager of marketing and relations, “We are thrilled to have this fantastic opportunity with the kids from the SEN department.

“But in order for this project to succeed, we need specific food supplies, thus we’re searching for generous individuals to help ease the financial burden and support us in realising this chance.

“Even a £10 donation could go a long way towards helping students gain valuable work experience and ensuring that our service users receive weekly home-cooked lunches in addition to our team’s specialised support.”

“Those little acts of kindness have the power to completely change someone’s life and give them something to look forward to.”

At its open-door day facilities in Worcester and Malvern, the charity regularly serves prepared meals every morning to individuals who are rough sleepers or who are in temporary housing.

Over 287 people visited the Worcester day facility in 2023, using its services for meals, assistance, or its laundry and shower facilities.

The program with the SEN department at HoW College gives students practical work experience.

“The hope is that we can help our students build initial skills for the working world while giving them insight into vulnerable lives and homelessness, especially as the Worcester day centre is next door to us,” stated Amy Miller, the supervisor of work experience learning at HOW College.

“We will be incorporating this into our menu plan and making the most of all food donations because, as a college, we also promote sustainability and ensure that we maximise all food produce to minimise any waste.”

For Maggs’ service users, specialised teams like the Outreach, Intensive Transition, and Harm Reduction teams offer customised support.
