Following an afternoon collision involving “multiple” vehicles, St Helens Road was blocked up close to its intersection with Morris Green Lane, and emergency personnel were called in.
Today Greater Manchester Police revealed that the crash happened after a police pursuit by its Tactical Vehicle Intercept Unit (TVIU).
A force spokesman stated that the pursuit started when the squad saw a stolen car that was later involved in an accident. Reports of any significant injuries are pending.
The car has been retrieved for forensics and is part of an ongoing burglary investigation, the force continued. There have been no takedowns.
Images from the site showed a black Range Rover on the sidewalk and a white 4×4 on its roof. Firefighters from nearby seemed to be addressing an issue with a BMW that had collided with a wall at the intersection.
“I saw two cars coming down the road pretty fast and one of them, the BMW, crashed into a wall,” stated an unnamed eyewitness. The next thing I know, a person was doing a runner out of the passenger side. He had to be hurt. The automobile was empty of other people. That region has some really awful driving.”
He continued: “The police and the fire came and it was total chaos.”
“People are constantly speeding or driving erratically on this road,” remarked a bystander. I detest using it, but I do it every day.”
“At around 2pm on Monday, two fire engines from Bolton fire station and the Technical Response Unit from Ashton fire station attended reports of a crash involving several vehicles on St Helens Road, Bolton,” a Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) spokeswoman stated.
“Firefighters were there for about an hour, making the cars and the surrounding area safe.”
