One person was killed and four people were critically injured in a massive three-car highway collision early this morning.
Five ambulances rushed to the site of a major collision on the M65 in Burnley, Lancashire, after emergency services were summoned at around 3.30am.
Lancashire Police stopped both carriageways between junctions 8 for Hapton and 10 for Burnley for more than nine hours to conduct an investigation.
North West Ambulance Service transported five patients to hospital with serious injuries, one of whom died. The road was later reopened about 12.50pm.
A Lancashire Police spokeswoman said: “At around 3.37 a.m., we were called to reports of a collision at M65 junction nine involving three vehicles.”
‘Emergency services responded, and five individuals were transported to the hospital with significant injuries, one of whom tragically died.
‘Our sympathies are with their loved ones during this extremely difficult time, and they are being supported by officers.’
A North West Ambulance Service NHS Trust spokeswoman said: “We responded to a road traffic collision following a call at 3.29 a.m.
In attendance were five ambulances, two response vehicles, and an operations commander.
‘Five victims were sent to the hospital, some of whom required treatment for serious injuries.
