Leading car seat maker Diono’s CEO and child safety expert, Tim Maule, offers his thoughts on this seasonal problem, saying: “Parents and carers need to be aware of the increased likelihood of spiders in their vehicles as we head back to school and transition into Autumn.” Child passenger safety is always our top priority, and even little distractions can have detrimental effects. Unexpected spider interactions can be extremely stressful and distracting while driving, which increases danger.”
Accordingly, he states that “regular inspections are crucial”; therefore, if at all possible, try to check your child’s seat, particularly the roof, for spiders before each trip. Spiders are drawn to dark, uninhabited locations, so you should also keep your car tidy and free of trash. “Regular cleaning not only deters spiders but also ensures your child’s seating area remains hygienic”, the expert explains.
In addition, you want to think about employing spider-repellent, kid-safe techniques. “When used safely and away from your child’s immediate seating area, natural deterrents like peppermint oil can be effective,” he continues. It’s strongly advised to give them a quick wipe down and spritz them with some natural repellents.”
Adding to this advise, Tim stresses the significance of keeping a peaceful environment for both child passengers and drivers, saying that “a sudden appearance of a spider can upset a child or startle a driver, potentially leading to dangerous situations on the road.” “By taking preventative measures, we can minimise these risks and ensure a safer journey for everyone.”
The expert further notes that this problem extends beyond comfort because, even while the majority of spiders we come across aren’t harmful, their presence may nevertheless be extremely stressful, particularly for kids who could be allergic to or afraid of them. The expert advises parents who are worried about spiders in their cars to conduct a full interior search, adding, “If you do find spiders, remove them safely and consider implementing some of the preventative measures we’ve discussed.”
