Apostolos Stamatelopoulos has joined Motherwell on a three-year deal, with the Fir Park club holding the option of a further 12 months.
For an unknown amount, the 25-year-old Australian striker joins from Newcastle Jets; manager Stuart Kettlewell refers to the deal as “a good bit of business”.
In a June World Cup qualifying match against Palestine, Stamatelopoulos was substituted in the second half to win his maiden cap.
“We’ve been trying to bring in a goal scorer,” Kettlewell stated on the team’s website.
“Apostolos has qualities that we’re looking to add to the squad.”
The six-foot-three centre forward joined the Jets in January 2021 after stints with Adelaide United and Western United.
With 17 goals in the previous season, he now had 24 goals from 60 games in the A-League.
After watching Sunday’s 0-0 League Cup match between Motherwell and Partick Thistle at Fir Park, Stamatelopoulos remarked, “It’s great to finally say I’m a Motherwell player.”
“Seeing everyone gathered around and the boys performing made me want to go out there.”
“I’ve come a long way, but now I can concentrate on having an effect. My job is to score goals; that’s why I’m here. I’ll try my hardest to make that happen.”
