On July 15, two pupils from Cape High passed away due to a car that veered off Gills Neck Road.
At 11:26 p.m., a BMW 328 was travelling east on Gills Neck Road near the 16000 block when it veered off the road at a tight curve close to the Showfield and Wolfe Runne subdivisions, according to the police.
The vehicle proceeded onto a residential area, where it collided with a metal fence, a tree, and a wall or pillar before catching fire, according to the police.
The house sustained significant damage as a result of the fire, but the residents managed to escape without being hurt, according to the police.
At the scene, Elijah Ghabour and Ryan Andrew were declared deceased.
School counsellors and staff will be accessible for students in need of support at Cape High from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., Monday through Friday, according to a statement from Cape High Principal Kristin DeGregory. Additionally, for instant assistance, students, parents, or community members are urged to text 988 or call the 24-hour crisis hotline at 1-800-969-4357 (HELP). About 2:00 p.m. on July 16, families in the school district received a call and an email with the same information.
“The news of the deaths of two of our high school students due to a tragic accident that happened on July 15 deeply saddens our school community,” the spokeswoman added. “We send our sincere condolences to the families and friends of the students, as well as to everyone involved.”
Numerous companies and locals sent condolences on social media, with some even sharing two hearts with the colours of Cape Cod—one gold, the other Columbia blue.
For over three hours, the road was blocked off as the incident was cleared and examined. Numerous fire departments arrived on the spot.
