After an army officer was stabbed outside a Kent barracks, a man has been charged with attempted murder.
Lieutenant Colonel Mark Teeton was airlifted to the hospital following the Tuesday, 5.55 p.m. attack in Gillingham’s Sally Port Gardens, where he was seriously injured.
According to a statement from Kent Police, Anthony Esan, 24, was taken into custody after the incident and is scheduled to appear in court on Thursday.
A spokesman said, “Detectives looking into the serious assault of a soldier in Gillingham have charged a man with attempted murder.” At approximately 5:55 p.m. on Tuesday, July 23, 2024, Kent Police received a call to Sally Port Gardens from a man in his 40s who had been injured in a manner consistent with stabbing wounds.
“He was admitted to a hospital for medical attention, and as of right now, his condition is stable but serious.”
At around 6.30 p.m. on the same day, Anthony Esan, 24, was apprehended close to his Mooring Road, Rochester, home address. He is currently facing charges of attempted murder and possessing an offensive weapon in a public place.
“On Thursday, July 25, he is scheduled to appear at Medway Magistrates’ Court.”
The British Army’s 1 Royal School of Military Engineering Regiment headquarters are located close to Brompton Barracks, the road where the incident allegedly occurred, according to the police.
“We’re very sorry to confirm that a soldier has sustained serious injuries in an attack in Chatham, Kent,” an Army spokesman said on Tuesday. We are praying for the soldier and his or her family.
